'Kiddie Coke' Prescriptions Out of Control for So-Called 'Disorder' that Doesn't Exist

Badly behaved children in England being put in ‘chemical straitjackets’ says watchdog

The use of dangerous mind-altering drugs to treat so-called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has come under fire from a psychiatric watchdog, which says children are being placed in “chemical straitjackets.”

New figures obtained from the NHS Business Services Authority reveal 601,000 prescriptions for 'ADHD' drugs were dished out to children in England last year, a 107% increase compared to figures five years ago, when 290,000 'ADHD' prescriptions were written.

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), an international psychiatric watchdog, which obtained the figures, says they highlight more and more children are being labelled with the psychiatric ASBO, ‘ADHD,' rather than finding out what is really wrong with the child.

The drugs cost the NHS over £29million last year, compared to £6million in 2001. Commonly known as ‘kiddie coke’ due to similarities with illicit amphetamine drugs, their use has come under attack for being a form of social control, rather than treating a real physical condition.

CCHR points to drug alerts from regulatory agencies in the UK and around the world detailing the serious side effects of 'ADHD' drugs. The warnings highlight how some of the 'ADHD' drugs can cause visual hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, psychotic behaviour, violence and aggression.

While the symptoms of so-called ‘ADHD’ are listed in psychiatric textbooks, a major failing is a complete lack of scientific evidence to show that 'ADHD' actually exists, said Brian Daniels, spokesperson for CCHR in the UK.

"Metaphorically speaking, children are being kitted out with the new 'Emperor's new suit', a designer label worn by the boisterous, argumentative or disruptive child. But to represent that these troubles are caused by “chemical imbalances” or incurable “brain diseases” that can only be alleviated with dangerous psychiatric drugs is dishonest, harmful and often deadly," he said.

“They mask the real cause of problems in life and debilitate the individual, so denying him or her the opportunity for real recovery and hope for the future.”

CCHR is an international psychiatric watchdog that has been in the vanguard of patients' rights since it was co-founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology and Dr. Thomas Szasz, Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus, to investigate and expose psychiatric violations of human rights.
